“Ah Long Time Me Ah Dee-Jay”
U-Brown, born Huford Brown in 1956, grew up in Bond Street in Kingston, living two doors away from Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle studio. Heavily influenced by U-Roy, but also citing Big Youth, Dennis Alcapone, Prince Jazzbo and I-Roy as influences, U-Brown was one of the first students t join U-Roy’s DJ school. He, Ranking Joe and Ranking Trevor were among the first apprentices, before coming of the Great Raggamuffin General Brigadier Jerry, Colonel Josey Wales and The Principal Charlie Chaplin just to name a few who where taught by the teacher himself, Daddy U-Roy.

U-Brown began his career on the Silver Bullet sound system in the early 1970s, moving on to Sound of Music and replacing U-Roy on the King Tubby’s Hi-Fi system in 1975. He was signed to Virgin Records in the late 1970s, releasing two albums on their Front Line label. He set up his own Hit Sound label in 1977 as an outlet for his work as a producer. U-Brown returned to prominence in 1982, with “Tu Sheng Peng”, a version of Dennis Brown’s “If This World Were Mine”.

At present U-Brown is still touring Europe, America, Jamaica and Japan on sounds like Jah Love Music, King Stur Gav Hi-Fi, Blood and Fire Sound just to name a few. While in London, February 2002, U-Brown linked up with Ras Dennis of “Dub Vibes Production” to record a brand new album entitled “Ah Long Time Me Ah Dee-Jay”, choke full of roots and culture.
